Corrosion in chemical plants

The usability, lifetime and availability of many plants – particularly in the pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemical industry – are greatly determined by the resistance to corrosion of the materials used.

In addition to the selection of materials for all individual components, the design and layout, numerous other influencing variables exist which are often unknown in practice. Slight modifications to the chemical composition of raw materials or additives, minimal deviations from optimum process parameters or minor external influences can trigger active corrosion processes, resulting in serious changes with regard to product purity or the availability of equipment.
