The corrosion behaviour of equipment units or components is influenced by numerous factors. Unknown and complex correlations can often only be recorded and analysed empirically through the use of special measuring technology. Corrosion can in many cases only be verified as the cause of equipment or plant failure through inspection downstream of any damage caused. Process-associated laboratory investigations of corrosion processes are elaborate and time consuming.

The correlation of process conditions with corrosion conditions necessary for determining the cause is not possible with this procedure. In comparison to laboratory investigations in which absolute variables for the selection of suitable materials and inspection of resistance levels under defined long-term conditions are the primary factors, different procedures characterised by chronological variations need to be recorded in the process. In addition to adaptation of sensors to material and product flows, special demands are made with regard to signal recording and data processing.
Different measuring methods are simultaneously required to examine corrosion processes which are not externally visible in order to evaluate possible corrosion mechanisms such as surface and hole erosion.
