Materials out of the computer
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) has established a new basic principle for the development of materials. Characteristics of materials are able to be calculated only on the basis of fundamental natural laws, which definitely pushes the systematic improvement of materials and provides for an enormous competitive advantage. ICAMS is being supported by the industry, science as well as politics, among others by Bayer Materials Science AG.

Energy saving as order of the day challenges chemical engineers
In the course of the Processnet annual meeting in Karlsruhe at the beginning of October, process engineers were intensely dealing with the topic energy and commodity efficiency. Dr. Martin Wolf of Bayer Technology Services explained that, according to the Federal Statistical Office, the chemical industry increased manufacturing by 30 percent in the years from 1990 to 2004, and decreased energy demand more than 20 percent at the same time.
